2016 State of Independence Heights
The Independence Heights Annual Town Hall meeting was held on the first Tuesday in February 2016. The meeting entitled, “State of Independence Heights” was well attended and many residents came out to hear from community leaders. Reports about the State of schools, development and quality of life indicators were highlighted. Attendees heard from local elected officials including newly elected City of Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner and District H Councilwoman, Karla Cisneroz. Rhonda Skillern Jones, HISD school trustee for the area gave an update about the state of the schools in the neighborhood feeder pattern. Constable Alan Rosen also talked about his work and projects to addres crime and keep the community safe. Newly elected Councilwoman, Amanda Edwards also spoke about her desire to serve the constiuents of historic Independence Heights. Local leaders including the newly elected Super Neighborhood 13 President, Mardie Paige gave a brief overview of her plans to improve the social fabric of the neighborhood by working alongside newcomers and existing residents to serve the community. Independence Heights Redevelopment Council, Executive Director, Tanya Debose gave a brief history of development plans in the neighborhood and shared the top priorities that would be the focus for 2016.
The meeting was also an opportunity to mix and mingle with local candidates seeking the neighborhoods support for election. Attendees also enjoyed a taste of Independence Heights thanks to homemade cream cheese cake provided by B and J Cake Shoppe, a local bakery in the community. The meeting was held in the auditorium of historic Booker T. Washington High School. BTW Principal Dr. Carlos Phillips and the principals of two other schools in the area were also in attendance including Ms. Jones of High School Ahead Academy and Ms. Busby, principal of MC Williams Middle School.
This annual meeting was a gathering of leaders and residents seeking to be informed about the current community climate and how they can be involved in strengthening their own community.
